When Graduating From César Ritz Colleges In 1989, Duncan O’Rourke Decided To Go For An International Career And Thought That Starting Out By Becoming A General Manager Would Be A Good Start. This Was, After All, What Duncan Felt He Had Been Best Prepared For At César Ritz Colleges. Even Today, Duncan Recalls That The Skills Gained During His Studies (Operations Such As Food And Beverage, Service Essentials, Kitchen, And Even The More Abstract Side Of Financial Performance And Optimization Of Processes), Were What Generally Prepared Him For His Career. In Our Interview With Duncan, He Told Us That “Specifically, The First Doors Open In Your Career Are Possibly The Most Important Ones” And That, “Graduating From César Ritz Colleges Meant The Right Doors Opened For Me.”

During My Time At César Ritz Colleges, I Participated In The Evian Prize For Young Talent Organized By The Société Des Eaux Minérales D’Evian. Roland Duerr 在杜拜的 Burj 工作了7年,現今任職 紐約 Essex House 的 餐飲管理執行經理。
高中畢業後,成功被瑞士其中一家最好的飯店錄取 – 在Murten湖的The Relais & Châteaux Hotel Le Vieux Manoir。
後來,被杜拜的Jumeirah Beach Hotel錄取,一開適當管理階級的實習生,不久後,榮升當渡假村第二大經營店的Beachcombers餐廳的餐飲經理。我放棄了當時的職位,並且完成了我的學位。

After Graduating With An Award For High Academic Achievement, My Professional Life Started At One Of Switzerland’s Best Hotels, The Relais & Châteaux Hotel Le Vieux Manoir On Lake Murten.
Then It Was Off To Dubai Where I Was Offered A Position As A Management Trainee At The Jumeirah Beach Hotel. I Was Quickly Promoted To The Position Of Restaurant Manager At The Beachcombers Restaurant, The Resort’s Second Largest Outlet. I Left To Pursue My Studies And Graduated With A Bachelor Of Arts In Hotel And Restaurant Administration.
I Then Joined The Four Seasons Hotel In Berlin As Assistant Manager In The Food And Beverage Department. Six Months Later, I Became Purchasing Manager And The Following Year, Was Appointed Restaurants Manager, Supervising The Operational And Administrational Side Of The Food And Beverage Department.
For Seven Years, I Worked In Dubai At The Famous Burj Al Arab Hotel, Starting Out As Assistant Food And Beverage Manager, Then Food And Beverage Manager And Later, The Director Of Food And Beverage. In August 2011, I Transferred Within The Company To New York At The Jumeirah Essex House, An Iconic And Historic Hotel In The Middle Of New York City Where I Am Executive Assistant Manager – Food And Beverage.

I Was Born And Raised In A Family Of Hoteliers, So A Hospitality Career Came Naturally To Me. In 1996, After Graduating From University Centre César Ritz (UCCR), I Started Working For Hyatt Hotels. Through Challenging Assignments In A Variety Of Countries, I Was Exposed To Various Facets Of The Industry, From Pre-Opening Teams To Established Hotels, In India, Japan, Korea, And The USA.

In January 2008, After Two Years In Vanyavilas, I Moved To The Flagship Property Of The Oberoi Group In New Delhi, Again As General Manager. This Is Where I Am Today. “I am currently working in the Investments and Development Projects department of the Valamar Group, Croatia’s leading tourism company. My role includes the analysis of various businesses in the hospitality and tourism sector to determine potential opportunites for mergers and acquisitions. Additionally, I coordinate the orchestration of strategic investment plans for the group, the reorganization of managerial structures, the repositioning of old properties as well as the development of financial projections.Some of the highlights of my career include one of the largest mergers in the tourism sector in Croatia, the development of a 10 year business strategy for Valamar and the in-depth business performance analysis of the group’s major competitors.Two of the most important skills that the school taught me are critical thinking and the ability to build a professional network.My advice to aspiring hoteliers is whatever you choose to study, specialize yourself in an area that is interesting to you and be the best you can in it. Most of the time, students don’t know what to choose and they go study a little bit of everything. But it has been shown that employers are looking for people who have exceptional knowledge and skills in a particular area, rather than average knowledge in many. “Originally I was studying economics and finance. However, with time, I realized that I enjoy working with people more than with numbers. Hospitality offered me a career that allows me to do what I like and to travel around the world, one of my hobbies.In my current role, I am responsible for new hotel developments in Russia and CIS (Russian Commonwealth), as well as the overall growth of the group in the region. I work with potential hotel owners and financiers to develop management and franchise contracts and to ensure that they meet our brand requirements.One of the most important skills I learned while studying at César Ritz Colleges was the ability to understand different points of view and to take a broader look at issues. The diversity of students and professors on campus taught me just that. I also learned communication, teamwork and many hands-on skills that are still coming in handy today.As I moved from one role to another, each had their own highlights.
